I chronicled my jaw surgery and recovery experience on my blog. Years later, I still receive fairly regular messages from - [Pre-Op Appointment...and a Christmas Song](https://lindsaylackey.com/pre-op-appointment-and-a-christmas-song/) - Yesterday afternoon I had my final pre-op appointment with Dr. D'Addario. They took all my vitals, did a brief physical, took X-rays, and made the final set of molds in order to make my surgical splint. He also answered all of my questions about surgery--and let me tell you, I had a bunch of them! - [The Do's and Don'ts of Bite Molds](https://lindsaylackey.com/the-dos-and-donts-of-bite-molds/) - Raise your hand if you've ever had the privilege of having bite molds taken. (If you don't instantly know what this is, you haven't had this experience. Trust me.) For those of you who've ever had this done, I salute you. Having bite molds taken is one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've ever had. - [Day 1: My new doppelgänger](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-1-my-new-doppelganger/) - Pain Level: 3 Food consumption: All syring-fed liquids. Naked brand juice is tasty and filling, and chicken broth is savory and delicious. Numbness: My entire bottom lip and my chin are all numb. Yesterday the whole bottom half of my face was numb, so I'm thankful that it seems to be getting better already. I've - [Site Changing](https://lindsaylackey.com/site-changing/) - Since I've been passing out a lot of business cards lately (yay, SCBWI connections!), I thought I'd better check in on this rackety old website of mine. Turns out, it's pretty shabby. And often ignored. And pathetically out of date. SO. Please bear with me! I am in the early stages of revamping this sad little - [Into That Darkness Peering ](https://lindsaylackey.com/into-that-darkness-peering/) - I was invited to write a literary essay in the catalog for "Into That Darkness Peering," an art exhibit at the Poe Museum in Richmond, VA. The show features the work of contemporary painters, all of whom peer into the darkness of Edgar Allan Poe in their work. The paintings are stunning and haunting, and - [Big changes](https://lindsaylackey.com/big-changes/) - Recently, I took a giant leap of faith and left my job with Penguin Random House in order to work full-time as a freelance writer and editor. I've deeply valued my years of experience in library services and the publishing industry, and know I'll never stray too far from my professional roots. However, I'm excited - [nyc with nana: a middle](https://lindsaylackey.com/nyc-with-nana-gone-flitted-away/) - Gone - flitted away, Taken the stars from the night and the sun From the day! Gone, and a cloud in my heart. ~Alfred Tennyson It's hard to believe this week is already over, and Nana is packed up and on her way back to Colorado. We spent months looking forward to this week, and - [nyc with nana: this city, this moment](https://lindsaylackey.com/nyc-with-nana-three-days-of-fun/) - I can't believe how fast time is flying by! We've had a crazy, fun-filled three days; but I've also been sick for the last three days, so my chronicling has suffered. Saturday was another day bursting with activity and new memories. In fact, it may have been a little too full of fun! We spent - [nyc with nana: blue whale and back pain](https://lindsaylackey.com/nyc-with-nana-blue-whale-and-back-pain/) - Well, we seem to have maxed out our natural resources yesterday. Today was a slow start--even slower than yesterday--which was mostly my fault. (My 2 am blogapade wiped me out.) The weather, also was less cooperative today, and we chose to stay inside a bit longer while the rain blew sideways for a little while. - [nyc with nana: a new view](https://lindsaylackey.com/nyc-with-nana-a-new-view/) - On Easter Sunday this year, my 76-year-old Nana and I decided we were going to take a trip to New York City together before the year was out. We sat down and made a plan, which was entirely centered around the Metropolitan Opera season schedule, and decided that we'd head to the Big Apple in - [crying in the bathroom: thoughts on grief](https://lindsaylackey.com/crying-in-the-bathroom-thoughts-on-grief/) - Throughout the day, I've been secretly crying at my desk or in a bathroom stall. And all day I've caught myself thinking, "You need to stop this. Get over the tears and do your job." And only just now, in the quiet of my own home, has something occurred to me: I've been lying to - [#worth1000words: The Ledge](https://lindsaylackey.com/worth1000words-the-ledge/) - A young boy is challenged by his reckless grandfather. - [Rain = Poetry](https://lindsaylackey.com/rain-poetry/) - We had a crazy rainstorm this afternoon, and as I ran across the parking lot to my car after work, this poem tapped its fingers on my brain. I'm no poet. That honor belongs to my Nana. But I offer up this little verse anyway. Call it a gift -- one to inspire all of - [#worth1000words](https://lindsaylackey.com/worth1000words/) - I heart Twitter. I mean, really. I truly love it. I love how it forces brevity; I love the way it connects people; and I love THE PEOPLE. I wants to hug all my tweeps. Tonight, Twitter made me love it even more because it brought a super fun writing prompt idea into my life. - [my people: orthodontist and jaw surgeon](https://lindsaylackey.com/my-people-orthodontist-and-jaw-surgeon/) - If you live in Colorado and need any sort of maxillofacial or orthodontic treatment, I can't sing the praises of my doctors more highly. I am a vocal teacher and was a vocal performance major. It’s safe to say music is my life. I teach over 80 students a week, and sing constantly : ) I am having double jaw surgery this July and I am extremely - [One Year Later: Before and After Photos](https://lindsaylackey.com/one-year-later-before-and-after-photos/) - I can't believe it has been a YEAR since my jaw surgery! My life is so, so different than what it was a year ago. People often ask me if it was worth having surgery, and my answer is unflinchingly YES. I would do it again in a heartbeat! It was absolutely worth it, and - [One for the Money...](https://lindsaylackey.com/one-for-the-money/) - Today was the day I faced my fears. Today I finally saw the statement for the hospital costs for my surgery. Now, I got the bill from my surgeon's office a few months ago, and didn't share it with you all because I was waiting for the other, more frightening shoe to fall. I knew - [17 Weeks: Time for a change](https://lindsaylackey.com/17-weeks-time-for-a-change/) - Today marks exactly 17 weeks since my surgery. Since I pretty much don't even think about the fact that I had surgery anymore, unless I'm feeling the hole in my jaw bone (which is kind of fascinating), I figure it's time to change things up on my blog a bit. I will continue to update - [8 weeks, and all is well...err, mostly.](https://lindsaylackey.com/8-weeks-and-all-is-well-err-mostly/) - Well, it has officially been over 8 weeks since my surgery. I apologize that I left many of you hanging, without a new post for 5 of those 8 weeks. :| There have been no disasters, and I am not buried in a pit of depression or pain or despair. I've very simply been...well, busy - [Day 20 part 2: A quick video!](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-20-part-2-a-quick-video/) - We're always trying new things here at Musings of a Lockjaw. :) http://youtu.be/HrEOExF4rVA - [Day 21: 3 Weeks in Pictures](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-21-3-weeks-in-pictures/) - I thought a picture montage of the journey would be a fun way to celebrate 3 weeks of healing! When I was going through these pictures, I felt a quiet sense of thrill at how quickly I'm progressing. Yippee! Day of Surgery, Dec. 28, 2011 Day 1 of Recovery... Day 2... Day 3... Day - [Day 20: Bye bye, surgical brackets! Hello, flossing!](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-20-bye-bye-surgical-brackets-hello-flossing/) - I went back to the orthodontist for the first time since surgery today. Can I just say that I love my orthodontist and his staff??? They're so great and fun and supportive. Everyone made a big deal about how great I look, which of course made me feel like I look great. :) The best - [Day 19: I ain't nothing but a hound dog...drooling all the time](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-19-i-aint-nothing-but-a-hound-dog-drooling-all-the-time/) - Well, I have no excuses. My shameful lack of blog posts is purely the result of laziness. That's all there is to it! For the past few days I've had fleeting thoughts of creating a new post...and then those fleeting thoughts fleeted themselves out the window in favor of another episode of Dick Van Dyke - [Day 15: INSOMNIA](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-15-insomnia/) - For the last two nights, I have been suffering from terrible insomnia. I'm exhausted when I go to bed, but my eyes won't close, my brain won't stop whirring, and sleep never comes. I maybe got a spotty two hours of sleep on Tuesday night, and last night, my insomnia was so bad, and so - [Day 13: Cheek Ripping](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-13-cheek-ripping/) - Pain: 1 Nausea: None. Swelling: Almost completely gone. I still have a mild "double chin" look, but my face no longer resembles the jowly face of Alfred Hitchcock. Numbness: My lips and chin are in a constant state of burning turmoil these days, which is, of course, a great sign of nerve health and healing. - [Day 11: 25 mm and a Toddler](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-10-25-mm-and-a-toddler/) - I haven't written in a few days because, at first, nothing had really changed and I didn't have much to say. Then I didn't write because I had a HORRIBLE day of HORRIBLE pain and nausea (yesterday), and didn't feel like blogging. But today, I'm much better--a whole new woman, in fact--and have some fun - [Day 6: Freedom and Bliss!](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-6-freedom-and-bliss/) - Pain: 4 Numbness: Same. You know in Road Runner cartoons when Wiley the Coyote accidentally electrocutes himself instead of Road Runner, and as he walks away, his whole body lights up with electric shock every other step? Well, Wiley the Coyote has been walking his electric-coyote walk across  my bottom lip all day. Swelling: Almost - [Day 7: One week anniversary!](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-7-one-week-anniversary/) - Pain: 3 Numbness: Same old, same old. Nausea: Doc wrote a prescription for another patch, so I'm doing alright! Hopefully this one will last through the end of my Percoset, and I won't need more. Food Consumption Today: oatmeal and a mashed up banana for breakfast, two small, soft cheese wheels, and about 1/2 cup - [Day 5: All You Need Is Love...and Condiment Bottles](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-5-all-you-need-is-love-and-condiment-bottles/) - Pain: 6-7 Numbness: Same. Nausea: Bad this morning, but passed without incident. Back this afternoon after my 3 hour nap, but went away after tomato soup. My day of socializing yesterday caught up with me last night and this morning, and my pain was the worst it's been. After my 4 and 9 am doses - [Day 4: Confessions of a Socialite](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-4-confessions-of-a-socialite/) - Pain: 5-6 Numbness: Still my entire lower lip and chin. I've started to feel a few painful spasms in my chin, though, along with the continuing tingling and "sunburned" feeling I have in my lower lip. Nausea: None! Today is the last day of my new patch, though... Today was a good day, overall. I - [Day 3: Sleeping Beauty](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-3-sleeping-beauty/) - Pain Level: 3 Nausea: on and off all day, but not as bad as yesterday Swelling: going down! Still definitely large and uncomfortable, but I don't look quite as boxy as I did yesterday. I've been much better about icing today, which has helped tremendously. (Also, a tip for those of you recovering from jaw - [Day 2: The misery is coming! The misery is coming!](https://lindsaylackey.com/day-2-the-misery-is-coming-the-misery-is-coming/) - If you don't like to talk about vomit, you'd better stop reading here. Sorry... It's just been one of those days! I had been prescribed an anti-nausea patch that I put on before surgery. I didn't experience even a little nausea with that patch, until about 5 am this morning, that is. Vomiting was one - [The Beginning of the End...](https://lindsaylackey.com/the-beginning-of-the-end/) - Although you may have come to love and anticipate the style of Lindsay's posts, you must endure her husband posting on her behalf for at least one day. I am Brandon and I am here to report the details of the largest event in the Jaw Journey thus far. In case she hasn't told you - [Updates, blending and guitars](https://lindsaylackey.com/updates-blending-and-guitars/) - First, the most important news for my prayer warriors: My surgery time has been moved up to NOON tomorrow, instead of 3 pm! This is very good news! I won't be quite as hungry, and the chances of my going home same-day are much better. I'm very grateful for the earlier time. I spent my - [Merry Christmas!](https://lindsaylackey.com/merry-christmas/) - I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Mine was absolutely blessed. I enjoyed every moment with my family today--from our early morning gift-opening at my parents' house, to glitter and make-up time with my young cousin, Sophie, this afternoon, to a long conversation with my in-laws and brother-in-law tonight. I also felt very, very loved - [confession](https://lindsaylackey.com/confession/) - Tonight I'm feeling anxious and scared about my upcoming jaw surgery. - [Gettin' the Goods](https://lindsaylackey.com/getting-the-goods/) - Well, the preparations for the big day are officially underway. My mom once gave me excellent advice when I expressed how nervous I was about surgery. She said, "Just plan it like you planned your wedding, and then you'll be able to relax and trust that everything will go smoothly." I realize, of course, I - [No Extra Parts](https://lindsaylackey.com/no-extra-parts/) - Black Friday. The day when the masses try to save the economy with their consumerism. I, however, spent zero money, and baked a bunch of Christmas cookies with my mom. After the chaos of the day, when my husband was finally freed off from his job in retail, my parents joined us for an evening showing of - [You can't say I didn't warn you!](https://lindsaylackey.com/you-cant-say-i-didnt-warn-you/) - This morning at work, I decided to count how many actual work days I have left between now and surgery. Surgery is 35 days away, and I have *gulp* 16 work days between now and then!! Cue blood pressure rising, breathing getting shallow, pulse racing... I don't know why this number stresses me out, but - [In case I needed reminding...](https://lindsaylackey.com/in-case-i-needed-reminding/) - Ugh. Today was one of those days that reminded me why I need jaw surgery. I woke up this morning in terrible, blinding jaw pain. The right side of my face was burning in an arc that stretched from my collar bone to the top of my head, with a concentrated stabbing-knife kind of pain - [New circumstances!](https://lindsaylackey.com/new-circumstances/) - Just a quick update to say that two wonderful things happened this month: both Brandon and I got new jobs!! Yippee! So our income has increased a bit, we're both much happier and in fields we want to be in long-term, and my insurance has changed, which might mean coverage for surgery! We're both really - [October Miracles](https://lindsaylackey.com/october-miracles/) - Well, the past few weeks have been pretty amazing...and I figured I better update my blog again. In early October, I visited the surgeon for another consultation, and he declared me ready for surgery. It was a momentous occasion for several reasons: One, it's about dang time. I've been waiting for this day for almost - [November Miracles!](https://lindsaylackey.com/november-miracles/) - I can hardly believe I'm able to write these sentences: My jaw surgery is OFFICIALLY SCHEDULED! And...INSURANCE WILL COVER IT! Wow, it's been a wild ride since my last update--and this post will be full of even more evidence of God's incredible mercy and provision! So, as I talked about last time, Nicole (at my - [1 jaw or 2?](https://lindsaylackey.com/1-jaw-or-2/) - Well...more news. Some good, some less good, I suppose. As I reported earlier, surgery has been pushed back and will not be during this summer. I'd originally heard late this fall, but after meeting with my surgeon yesterday, there's a chance it could be as late as next February. Sigh... Turns out there is very - [who's paying for this, anyway??](https://lindsaylackey.com/whos-paying-for-this-anyway/) - Now that I have some more time to fight insurance, I'm starting to work on an appeal against the exclusion. I'd love to get some feedback from any readers who have an idea of how to fight insurance for orthagnastic surgery. So far, insurance has denied everything: the braces, the surgery, the hospital stay, everything. - [surgery schedule update](https://lindsaylackey.com/surgery-schedule-update/) - Well, my orthodontist and surgeon met yesterday to discuss my situation. They decided that my orthodontist needs to keep working on my arch proportion, which will take 2-3 more months. They're also concerned about my bite stability. My bite has been changing lately since I don't have a mouthpiece to keep things in place. Apparently - [blogs of inspiration](https://lindsaylackey.com/blogs-of-inspiration/) - Well, I'm finally trying to get started with this whole jaw-journal thing. I've been talking about it for a while, but haven't started...mostly because writing about it seems hard. (It's a little sad and ironic that writing about this whole situation is hard considering I want to be a writer...and a writer should probably be - [the many faces of Lindsay](https://lindsaylackey.com/the-many-faces-of-lindsay/) - Thought I'd share a few photos of my face over the years. I do have an overbite, though it is fairly mild. The most prominent deformity (as I call it...because, well, it is) is my open bite, which is especially evident in my wedding pictures. I've also included one of the mouth pieces I wore ## Pages - [Welcome!](https://lindsaylackey.com/) - Lindsay Lackey is an author of middle grade fiction and former library services worker.
